May News

 May 13, 2021

Dear PreK Families,

You have gotten notices from the school district that students are going to be doing some at home work to make up for missed school time because of COVID this year. Mrs. Hutchins, the school nurse and I have been working together to plan some activities for you to do with your child at home. The first packet of home learning activities will go home with your child on Friday. When your child finishes his or her work you can send it back to school or take a picture and email it to me. Mrs Hutchins and I will also be available through google meet for office hours if your child needs help completing work or wants to check in with one of us.  You will receive the links by email.

After the school vacation, we spent some time learning about communities. The class learned about maps and we did projects about maps. We discussed Earth Day and created 3-D towns using blocks, play people, roads, train tracks, and wooden buildings. Students also discussed jobs in the community and thought about what they wanted to be when they became adults. We read many interesting books including: Me on the Map by Joan Sweeney, My Map by Ssara Fanelli, This Is Our House by Michael Rosen,  I Stink by Jim MacMullen and Kate MacMullen, Guess Who? by Margaret Miller, and Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann.

Last week, we completed a short study about birds. We talked about what we already knew about birds and generated questions that we wanted to know. The class examined some real bird nests and Weston brought one in to share! All of the nests looked different. We completed some art projects such as: painting with feathers and building clay nests. The students also made bird life cycle spinners. We read many books about birds, including: Robins by Melvin and Linda Berger, My Nest is the Best by P.D. Eastman, A Robin Grows Up by Melvin and Linda Berger, Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman.

Currently, we are learning about the butterfly life cycle. We have some caterpillars that we are observing. Soon they will change into Painted Lady Butterflies and we can release them.

The 4s have also finished learning about the formation of upper case letters and will be focusing on writing their names independently.

Next week, I will be sending out a google survey about the WRS PreK Program, please fill it out and submit it at your convenience.

Students who are moving up to kindergarten will visit the kindergarten classrooms some time before the end of the year to see the space and meet the teachers. Also, the last week of school you will receive your child’s TS Gold report.

Thank you,

Mrs. Zayas and Miss Taylor
