February News

February 25, 2019

Thank you to all of the parents who were able to visit during our card sale. The children were so
excited! Thank you also to families who sent in items for the class party. We appreciate it!

Right before the break, we finished our study of snow. We examined snowflake crystals, we did a
science experiment to make our own 3-D snowflake crystals, did Arctic animal yoga, we played with
snow in the sensory bin, and we enjoyed playing in the snow on the playground. We read several
stories about snow too, including: The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, The Biggest Snowman Ever
by Steven Kroll, The Little Snowflake by Steve Metzger, and The Biggest, Best Snowman by Margery
Cuyler.
This is the afternoon class playing on the playground.

We are starting a unit on fairy tales. We will be reading different versions of well known stories,
including: Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Jack and the Beanstalk,
The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, and The Little Red Hen.

We have begun learning how to write the uppercase letters. Number and handwriting lessons are
multi-sensory. First, students write the number or letter in the air and engage their large arm muscles.
Next, we trace the number/letter on a textured surface. Third, students trace the number/letter in a
sand tray. With letters, there is an extra step of building the letter with wooden shapes. Lastly, we
write the number/letter on a whiteboard, or writing mat. Engaging more than one sense helps all
students learn to write numbers and letters. Writing uses a visual motor skills and fine motor skills.
This is a photo from some of our steps for writing numbers.

To help your child build up their fine motor skills at home, encourage him/her to play with Legos,
use play doh, and help with cooking. Here is a link to a website with more information.

Parent Teacher Conferences are coming up later next month on 3/21 and 3/22. We will put out a
sign-up sheet for times next week.
